It has occurred to me that Representative Fetty Brown may, for good reason, not run for re-election to her seat in the Oregon House. I would like to see the kind of service that Representative Brown has given Lane County continue. And so I will seek election to her seats and hope I can be as good a legislator as she has been. If she does decide to run for reelection, I will file for another seat in Oregon House My primary concern as a legislator will be the quality of life in Oregon. For years, I have been rooting for Ed Fadley and the legal women voters who were fighting pollution even before it was a thing to do. This is unadjusted for our for inflation, so in a sense, I'm talking about a level in terms of real goods and services that's perhaps as much as 70% higher rather than 100% higher. Are they willing to accept a tax on non-returnable containers, or are they willing have the inconvenience, at least they seem to think it's an inconvenience of returnable containers? Are people willing to pay higher prices for goods and services because now we're going to have built into that price the cost of cleaning up the process that produced those products? Are we going to draw away, is the public willing to draw away from planned obsolescence of automobiles? One of the things that promotes so many waste cars on the highway is the fact that there are new models every year. But this sort of thing is deeply ingrained in the American culture. Also deeply ingrain to the American culture is this notion, this is my land. I'm going to do what I please with it. And so a man goes ahead and does what he pleases with it The Environmental Quality Commission needs money to be able to enforce the regulations that it's already established. That's the first thing. They're not capable of doing the job they've set out for themselves now because they don't have enough money. And if the people are as concerned about environment as they seem to be, and I believe they are, then the people aren't going to accept paying the bill to have this government agency protect their interests. What kind of industries do we want in Oregon? Do we want any more industries in Oregon?\" Well, you have to provide employment for your people. A man isn't anything without a job and a satisfying job at that. But Oregon has a higher-than-average educational level for the majority of its citizens, higher than the national average, and this tends to attract industries that are brain-power-oriented more so than brawn-power oriented. And one of the characteristics of brain- power-oriented industries for the most part Is that they tend to produce less pollution, and if we must attract industries to Oregon, I don't think we need to attract any more industry than is absolutely necessary to diversify our economy and get off a one-crop economy, lumber, and to keep a steady level of employment. Of course, the largest mistake, I think, is a failure to discriminate between wants and needs. There are such a large number of opportunities for people to spend their money.
