Then go find your teacher and the rest of your class. That way, everyone will know you got out OK. In a real fire, the door you'd normally use might be blocked. But when fire started in a couch, they tried to put it out. If you have a fire in your house, you should get out as fast as you can. Anyone who's experienced or fought a housefire could tell you flames spread very quickly. One of the most important fire prevention tools you can have in your home is a smoke detector. You should test it once a month and change the batteries every fall. Try to remember when you change your clocks later this month to change the battery. A working smoke detector can save your life by sensing smoke and sounding an alarm. But it's important to think about fire in your home long before that alarm rings. One of the best ways to keep fire in its place is to remember that matches and lighters are dangerous tools. If you find them, you should give them to an adult. We use fire all the time, lighting barbecues, fires in your fireplace, and campfires. But the only time a child should use a match or a lighter is when a parent supervises. That will help take some of the mystery out of fire, so it won't seem like such an exciting game. It's always a good idea to keep matches and lighters in a special place out of sight. A person was to blame for this fire near Oak Ridge. A firefighter was dead and almost 700 acres were blackened by the time the prior fire was out. And that was just one of this summer's wildfires. Oregon's 4,000 wildfires burned an area the size of six cities of Eugene. Those fires did hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage and cost even more to put out. Proper respect of a campfire can help prevent lots of forest fires. To make sure your campfire doesn't start a forest fire. Drown it, and have it checked by an adult. Take some time to stir the ashes and make sure they're cold, and never leave a campfire unattended. Another important part of summer, fireworks is also a major risk in the forest. There are opportunities to be burned, lurking all over your house. Something as innocent as water, if it's hot enough, can cause serious injury. To prevent hot water burns from the faucet or shower, turn the water heater down to 120 degrees or less. Your kitchen is the most dangerous place for burns in your house, stoves, ovens, and hot food can all do damage. When a person is cooking, they should turn pot handles in and keep children from playing in the kitchen to help prevent burns. Emergency room doctors and nurses see lots of cases every year in which quick moving children pull hot pans or cups of coffee down on top of themselves. Microwave ovens are great for cooking food fast, but the food often comes out unevenly heated. Food cooked in a microwave should be stirred and tested before serving.
